Gus’s Fried Chicken Hits Los Angeles

When my friend (shout out to Amber) told me she wanted to grab some fried chicken for Sunday lunch at a local spot that had, as she described, the best fried chicken she had ever had, I was skeptical. Then, I quickly remembered that my buddy is from the south, so I decided to give it a try. The spot was Gus’s Fried Chicken. Touted as world famous…and the chicken may just live up to the hype.

The Spot

When we got to Gus’s, it was much bigger than I expected. The place was super clean and had big screen TVs and exposed brick. But if you are expecting a fancy pants spot, that’s not going to happen. They serve the food on disposable plates and with plastic utensils. But the spot has a certain charm to it. It’s a great spot for a chill lunch or dinner with family and friends. The service was great, even tough the restaurant was super busy. Another bonus.

The Chicken (and More)

But that’s what you really want to know about, right? On the afternoon I went to Gus’s, someone actually posted on Facebook that they were heading to the location in Austin. In looking at the menu, I realized that this is really much larger establishment than I realized, with 15 locations in nine states.

I ordered a couple of chicken tenders, a wing, and a side of mac n cheese. My friend ordered the two-piece white with mac n cheese and greens. We, of course, split the seasoned fries.

When my food came out, I was a little hesitant. The skin was super crispy, and usually when that happens the meat below is either tough or rubbery. But I gave it a whirl.

Gus somehow manages to accomplish a super crispy skin along with super tender meat. This is a hard feat! I dug in so quickly I forgot to snap a pic of my chicken, along with some other things. Oops. It was juicy and fried to perfection. We tried to decipher the secret to the chicken between the two of, but couldn’t come up with the answer. Now, I have had some good fried chicken, and this chicken definitely ranks in probably the top two on my faves list.

As to the sides, the mac n cheese was cheesy and delish. It’s not my mom’s homemade recipe (which is legendary) but it was pretty darn good. And as a French fry connoisseur, I can say that the seasoned fries were definitely on point.

Somehow, we managed to finish most of our food. So we had to have dessert. After all, I have to try an array to write about it, right? 🙂

We had something called the Chocolate Chess pie. I am not a huge pie person, but we indulged on the dessert warmed up and with ice cream. OMG. It was like a cross between a brownie and chocolate mousse. The consistency wasn’t like mousse but it was lighter than a brownie. It’s so hard to describe, but all I know is that it was decadent and perfection. Make sure to get it warmed up because that is a true game changer.

Gus’s far surpassed my expectations. In fact, while we were eating, I was wondering if it would be ridiculous to order some to-go for dinner (I exercised restraint). But I definitely wanted to go back a few days later. The chicken was just that good. I think I’ve found a new L.A. chicken spot, and it is Gus’s.
