Chef’s Tasting: Yellow Tomato Catering Review

I ate three helpings of the kale salad.

I don’t think you are understanding what I’m saying. I ate three helpings of kale salad. It was absolutely fantastic… And I don’t even like kale. That is the beauty of Yellow Tomato Catering. They made me like kale.

Yellow Tomato Catering is a family-owned, mobile catering and foodie business based in Pasadena. They specialize in clean yet deliciously unique meals and Yellow Tomato was just featured in LA Travel Magazine. I had the amazing opportunity to sit down to a chef’s tasting with Alexandria Dotson, owner of Yellow Tomato, and I was not disappointed.

The Kale Salad

So let’s just jump right in. How did Yellow Tomato get me to like kale? Well, their kale salad is known in circles around LA.

Obviously, I was hesitant about the kale salad as the tasting started. But upon tasting it, I was more than pleasantly shocked. Yellow Tomato makes its own special dressing, which is super light and tasty. It has hints of dill and it really complimented the kale and red cabbage well. And Alexandria dressed the salad superbly. It was so flavorful, we thought that she had marinated the kale, but alas it was a quick dish that anyone could make (if you have her amazing dressing). Like I said, I had three helpings.

The Coconut Quinoa

Another specialty of Yellow Tomato Catering is the coconut quinoa with roasted almonds and dried cranberries. Alexandria tops it off with a special dressing to make it a salad, but it actually almost feels like dessert. The quinoa with the warm roasted almonds is absolutely fantastic. And the dried cranberries add a nice fruit taste. In fact, Alexandria told us that she frequently makes it into a breakfast cereal herself. It was sweet but without the added sugar.

Oven Roasted Lemon Chicken and Turkey Avocado Wraps

The lemon chicken was so tender and flavorful. The lemon was not too overpowering but could be tasted in every bite of chicken. It paired perfectly with the kale salad and the sweetness of the quinoa.

We also got to enjoy turkey avocado wraps. This sandwich was clean and easy and makes the perfect lunch meal. In fact, Yellow Tomato even has a lettuce wrap option for the gluten free crowd. The wrap was accentuated with a delicious sun dried tomato walnut pesto and other goodies to make up the sauce on the wrap and it ended with a kick with the pepper jack cheese.

Yum Yums

The meal was filling, yet healthy and clean. The kale salad was fantastic. But nothing tops the yum yums.

Yum yums are like mini sweet potato pies upgraded. They are perfectly spiced with cinnamon and you get an excellent crust-to-sweet-potato ratio in every bite. They are decadent, and when we bit into them we knew we were in for a treat. The crust is flaky and buttery and they were the perfect handheld snack. I highly recommend everyone in LA try a yum yum. They live up to the name.

Yellow Tomato Catering Review

Yellow Tomato does catering but also meal delivery. I got some kale salad for the week, and I look forward to ordering from Yellow Tomato more in the future. And those items aren’t even all they offer. For your next event, it is an excellent mix of healthy and tasty. And, as a family-owned business, they take great pride in their mission of letting people know that eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to settle for boring and unappetizing food. Mission accomplished.
