In this month’s edition of Teen Travel Chat, our teen correspondent Brooke discusses some of her travel goals over the next couple of years. Check out her shortlist of places to visit ASAP.
Although I may be too young for a bucket list, I have a few places in and outside of the United States that I am longing to visit before I graduate high school. I am hopeful that I can make it to some of these places over the next few years. However, if that doesn’t happen, I will keep these destinations on my travel to-do list for during or after college. Among many qualities and goals I imagine myself achieving as I grow older and wiser, some of them include playing back up music for a famous artist, breaking a record for sprinting in the National Senior Games, and traveling to different places around the world. Here is a list of destinations that I can’t wait to visit.
New York City
I would like to see for myself what it’s like in New York City. I would love to visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), go to a Broadway show, and see attractions like the Statue of Liberty. I think walking through Times Square would be really awesome with all of the lights and energy there. I want to experience the hustle and bustle of a big metropolitan city, which is a major contrast to where I live.
The main reason I want to visit Jamaica, before I graduate high school, is the FOOD! My mom raves about the beef patties in Jamaica and I want to try them as well as other foods such as rice and peas. I want to experience and learn about Jamaican culture. I also would just plain love to relax and enjoy the warm weather and scenery around me.
I’ve heard that Hawaii is like paradise on earth. I want to take in the amazing scenery and walk along the black sand beach and see a volcano for the first time. I’d also like to attend a luau. Hawaii ranks at the top of my list for places I’d like to visit. I think it will be a great place to make lots of memories.
I have been totally drawn in by the stunning pictures and video I’ve seen of Aruba. So much so, that Aruba is definitely on my travel “to do” list. I want to relax and swim in the clear, turquoise beaches. I would like to see the natural landforms that have been created in Arikok National Park. If I were to visit Aruba, I would love to go to the plazas to shop and try new food. Trying scuba diving for the first time is an awesome prospect and maybe doing a wreck dive of the SS Antilla, as well as other wrecks such as the Debbie II, Pedernales, Jane Sea, S-11, and DC-3 (two airplane wrecks that were sunken intentionally). I also want to do something thrilling and exciting, like parasailing on this happy island.
Because of the warm weather, tropical atmosphere, and beautiful scenery, which I have loved and appreciated so much since I was a kid, Costa Rica is another place that I believe I would really enjoy visiting. I want to experience the culture there and work on my Spanish skills, too. The nature and diverse wildlife in Costa Rica is appealing to me. Visiting the Arenal volcano, seeing hummingbirds, watching people go white water rafting (because I’m too scared I will fall out), and seeing a sloth are all things I would love to do while in Costa Rica. Since I had a blast zip lining in Cancun last summer, I would not turn down going again in the original zip lining destination, through a rain forest.
I have been to Wisconsin before, during the winter, so I would like to go during the summer for my next visit. One of the things on my bucket list is to go to a rural area, far away from areas with light pollution, so I can see all of the stars in the sky. I think Northern Wisconsin might be that place. I want to go back to Wisconsin before I graduate high school so I can go to Mirror Lake and Seth Peterson Cottage, a house designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
I want to travel to South America in order to learn more about the Spanish culture. I am taking my second year of Spanish now and really enjoy learning the language, so traveling to Argentina, Peru, and Venezuela would help improve my Spanish speaking skills.
Taking pictures of gorgeous in Canaima National Park is something that I’m interested in. I would enjoy visiting Angel Falls and the Amazon in Venezuela. In Argentina, I would really enjoy taking more pictures of the colorful houses in La Boca, Buenos Aires. The Iguaçu Falls and the Perito Moreno Glacier are both places that look breathtaking as well. The nature in these South American countries looks so inviting. I really want to see the nature, wildlife, and culture for myself and experience all that these countries have to offer.
Well, I think that’s all for now. Let me know any other recommendations that I should add to my list. Now I need to get to work to convince my parents to visit all (or some – more realistic) of these destinations. Wish me luck!
