Why I Like to Travel Solo

“The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.”

~Albert Einstein

Five years ago, I never thought I would be writing this… an article on why I like to travel solo. I never thought I would be saying that I really, *really* like traveling by myself. Five years ago, I thought the idea of solo travel was daunting and scary and unsafe and all of the things that we are fed by various forces in our lives. But I overcame that and I went. And now, I love it. Here’s why.

Ethical Treatment of Elephants in Asia and Why I Will Never Ride Them

When I was in Chiang Mai, I had the opportunity to visit Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating them in Thailand. But this sanctuary is the exception, not the rule. Most outfits allow tourists to ride elephants, many times up steep hills with seats on their backs. After I learned all that I learned in Thailand about the ethical treatment of elephants in Asia, it is safe to say I will never ride them.

5 Things I Learned During My Trip to Thailand

I recently returned from my first trip to Southeast Asia. I had the fortune to visit Thailand (Bangkok and Chiang Mai), Singapore, and Bali (along with dinner in Osaka, Japan, on a seven-hour layover). I will admit that I didn’t do as much research for this trip, as it crept up on me, but it ended up being a truly remarkable trip. And I learned a lot while I was there. Here are five things I learned during my trip to Thailand, the first full leg of my Southeast Asia trip.

Hotel Review: Magnolia Hotel St. Louis

Downtown St. Louis is home to numerous colleges, government buildings, the Mississippi riverfront, and, of course, the Gateway Arch. Outside of the riverfront and arch area, parts of downtown become like a ghost town, with streets empty and a sparse number of cars on the roads. But one of the most gorgeous and historical spots in the downtown area is the Magnolia Hotel St. Louis. I was fortunate to get to experience this historic landmark with a media discount on my recent visit to STL. Check out my Magnolia Hotel St. Louis review.
