I Don’t Think I Have A New York State of Mind

“It is often said that New York is a city for only the very rich and the very poor. It is less often said that New York is also, at least for those of us who came there from somewhere else, a city for only the very young.”

~Joan Didion

Some say New York is the nation’s melting pot. The city that never sleeps. America’s fashion capital. Inspiring.

But others call it loud. Noisy. Crowded. Rude. A concrete jungle.

The truth: It is all of these things. And during my first visit back to the city after having been away for 10 years—a whole decade—I felt all of these things and more. So here’s a recap of my time in NYC for none other than Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

‘The Best Thing I Ever Ate’: New York City Edition

“I am not a glutton–I am an explorer of food.”

~Erma Bombeck

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a foodie. So whenever I am traveling to a new (or old) city, I look for recommendations on the best places to eat from friends and family. And I also refer to my trusty list: the list I make when I sporadically have the opportunity to catch the show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.”

Food Network seeks to help foodies when visiting various cities by offering insight into the favorite dishes nationwide of chefs, restaurateurs, and television personalities that we watch on Food Network and the Cooking Channel. The premise: if we like to watch them, then surely we will want to eat where they love to eat.

I decided to take them up on some of their recommendations when I visited New York City. In such a huge food city, ‘The Best Thing I Ever Ate” seemed like a good place to start. So, I found a listing of all of the picks by city, and decided to try three different restaurants and the dishes that the various chefs recommended for each location.

All in all, the list didn’t let me down. The food really was delicious and gave me a great culinary experience of New York. Here are the places and dishes I tried. Bon appetit!

This is Me, The BarrisTourista

“The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”

~Saint Augustine

People wonder why I love to travel so much. They always ask if I just like to get away or think that I simply enjoy a good vacation. Both of those things are true, but it’s so much more than that.  For me, it goes to the very essence of the quote above. There is a vast, magnificent world that should be seen by everyone. The cultures, the people, the experiences worldwide are so vastly different, yet so very much the same. We are all people underneath all of the distinctions, and by experiencing new things and new places, we stand to come closer together. It’s hard to hate someone when you have seen how they live, how they love, how they want the same things in life that you do. But to never travel is dangerous; it’s myopic; it’s close-minded.  Perhaps—just maybe—if we all stepped outside our communities, our comfort zones, and our bubbles and experienced different cultures, we wouldn’t still be fighting against some of the sad injustices that we see around the nation and the world.
