“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”
When I attended Style Los Angeles Fashion Week, I went for the fashion and to see the new lines of some designers I knew and some I didn’t. What I got from some of the shows was an international journey in fashion.
Malan Breton: A Journey to Taiwan
The opening show on Wednesday, October 14, was famed fashion designer Malan Breton. Mid-show, the audience was shown a video, detailing Breton’s culture and heritage that showed why he named his show “A Journey to Taiwan.”
The colors were vibrant and the patterns were intricate. Many of the colors reminded me of the lanterns in Asian countries, which were repeatedly featured in the video. Here are some of the Taiwan-inspired looks:
The Uwi Twins Take Us to South Africa
On Friday, October 16, the Uwi Twins took the crowd on a journey to South Africa. The show opened with a drum and African dance presentation, and it was electric. The crowd was drawn to the intense drum beats and dancing was magnetic.
The twins are from South Africa and, from their video, were proud to bring their South African culture to the US and to LA Fashion Week. The looks were great. But the standout portion was the twin models. Oh, they were absolutely fantastic.
I didn’t expect fashion to intersect so poignantly with travel, but that is what I got. I had already been trying to make it to South Africa, but now I am interested to learn more about Asian culture and its influence on fashion. Mission accomplished.
