Five years ago, I never thought I would be writing this… an article on why I like to travel solo. I never thought I would be saying that I really, *really* like traveling by myself. Five years ago, I thought the idea of solo travel was daunting and scary and unsafe and all of the things that we are fed by various forces in our lives. But I overcame that and I went. And now, I love it. Here’s why.

Ethical Treatment of Elephants in Asia and Why I Will Never Ride Them

When I was in Chiang Mai, I had the opportunity to visit Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating them in Thailand. But this sanctuary is the exception, not the rule. Most outfits allow tourists to ride elephants, many times up steep hills with seats on their backs. After I learned all that I learned in Thailand about the ethical treatment of elephants in Asia, it is safe to say I will never ride them.
